The Heisei Period is an era of Japanese history. The period indicates the time of Japanese history resembling the dominion of Emperor Akihito. The period started on 8 January 1989 and ended on 30 April 2019. The Rewa era attained the period as Crown Prince Naruhito seated upon the throne on time. The Heisei Period History
Firstly, I will discuss the brief history of the Heisei period here. Though it is a modern and brief historical time in Japan, there were many events in the period. I will discuss those events here serially. So, no more delay, let’s go to know about the period briefly.
The Heisei Period is a modern period of Japanese history. The name Heisei was received from two Chinese history and philosophy books. The names of the books are the Grand Historian and the Book of Documents. The period is about Emperor Akihito, whose real name is Tsugu Akihito.
Tsugu Akihito was born on 23 December 1933 in Tokyo, Japan. He was the fifth child and the eldest son of Emperor Hirohito and Empress Nagako. Akihito ascended on the throne on 8 January 1989, and he governed till on 30 April 2019. In August 2011, Emperor Akihito addressed the nation in a televised address, expressing concern that his age would one day prevent him from carrying out his official duties.
This reflects his desire to retire. The Japanese diet passed a law in June 2017 to remove the throne of Akihito’s son Naruhito. After meeting with the Imperial House Council members, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe announced that April 30, 2019, would be the date set for Akihito’s departure.
Events Of The Heisei Period

In the year 1989, Japan reaches one of the fastest-growing economies in history. With the yen dramatically strengthening since the Plaza Accord in 1975, the Bank of Japan kept interest rates low, boosting investment, which boosted Tokyo’s property value by up to 0% of that year. Shortly before the New Year, the Tokyo Stock Exchange index Nikkei 225 reached its record high of 38,957.
The 1988 recruit Foux pass had already consumed public confidence in the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), which had ruled Japan for 38 years. In 1993, the party was overthrown by a coalition led by Marihiro Hosokawa. However, the parties only came together to overthrow the party, and the alliance collapsed due to a lack of position on almost every social issue.
During this period, The Hayabusa, a robotic spacecraft from the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, landed on an asteroid and collected samples of asteroid-sized material, which returned to Earth on June 13, 2010. It was the first spacecraft in history. Deliberately designed to land on an asteroid and then travel again. The Hayabusa mission was the first to return asteroid samples to Earth for analysis.
In the Heisei Period, The FIFA World Cup of 2002 was the first FIFA World Cup, which was held in Asia, the first to be held outside the United States or Europe, and the first to be unitedly hosted by multiple nations. Japan and South Korea co-hosted the men’s national football team’s world majority to enhance their relations.
In the period, China’s economy was considered the second-largest globally, and Japan’s economy was the third-largest in the world by the nominal GDP in 2011. In October 2015, Japan appeared the rank in the world’s most powerful military capability. Also, in the Heisei period, the Iraq war happened.
In the period, the population of Japan appeared at 128 million at the age of 2010. The population was the biggest in Japanese history. It is adjected owing to a low birthrate in the following years. On October 23, 2004, Niigata prefecture Earthquakes happened, and for this reason, there were killed almost 52 and injured more than hundreds.
